Children

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD or ADD) is a condition in which some children have difficulty controlling their behavior and/or paying attention.

The main characteristics of ADHD are hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity. Not all children with ADHD have the same symptoms.

People with ADD and ADHD display their stress in different ways depending on their unique make-up.

They may show distraction, spaciness, boredom, compulsive tendencies, depression or aggression, and lack of self-confidence. Though the symptoms displayed can be very diverse for each child, conventional approach tends to label each child with one diagnosis.

The symptoms are controlled as long as medication is administered. What happens when the underlying causes are never resolved as the child goes into adulthood?

The symptoms such as anger and/or depression have manifested for a reason and will not magically disappear unless they are addressed.

Other Symptoms are :-
  1. Children suffering from ADHD perform very poorly in school, may have behavioral issues at home, and have difficulty in social relationships with other children.

  2. Children with ADHD have difficulty concentrating and paying attention, especially when they are forced to sit at their school or home to complete their homework assignments. If a child suffering from ADHD chooses to do an activity himself, he may well sit and do it for hours and be completely involved in it.

  3. For a child with ADHD, it may be extremely difficult to follow any instructions.

  4. Children with ADHD misplace books, homework assignments, jackets etc.

  5. Children with ADHD have trouble making and keeping friends.

  6. Children with ADHD can be uncomfortably intrusive, interrupting others, and verbally loud to make sure their needs are attended to. They are often also described as silly and immature.

  7. ADHD children may be perceived in the school environment as troublemakers.

  8. ADHD children may be very bright, but may not succeed in any task that requires sitting still, paying attention, and concentration.

  9. Parents of ADHD children complain about having to repeat instructions again and again even to get the simplest things done.
Conventional Treatment:

The most commonly prescribed are stimulants for such children Stimulants provide only short term superficial healing and do not in any way treat the root cause of the problem.
  1. Stimulants do not treat all the symptoms manifested in children who suffer from ADHD.

  2. Stimulants can cause side effects such as appetite loss, insomnia, anxiety, headaches, tics and stomachaches.

  3. Parents of some children with ADHD who were administered these stimulants report other side effects such as increased heart rate or blood pressure, drowsiness, social withdrawal, irritability and moodiness, and involuntary movements or sounds.

  4. Stimulants get children into the habit of taking drugs.

  5. Stimulants may need to be taken throughout life as they do not address the problems from root cause of the problem.
If prescribed stimulants don't seem to help the child with ADHD, the physician may recommend Antidepressants or 'Off label medicines', which means the medicines that are approved by FDA for use in adults or older children, but not for younger children.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that appears in early childhood. You may know it by the name attention deficit disorder, or ADD. ADD/ADHD makes it difficult for people to inhibit their spontaneous responses-responses that can involve everything from movement to speech and attentiveness.

The signs and symptoms of ADD/ADHD typically appear before the age of seven. However, it can be difficult to distinguish between attention deficit disorder and normal "kid behavior." If you spot just a few signs, or the symptoms appear only in some situations, it's probably not ADD/ADHD. On the other hand, if your child shows a number of ADD/ADHD signs and symptoms that are present across all situations¾at home, at school, and at play¾it's time to take a closer look.

The three primary characteristics of ADD/ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The signs and symptoms a child with attention deficit disorder has depends on which characteristics predominate.

Children with ADD/ADHD may be:
  • Inattentive, but not hyperactive or impulsive.
  • Hyperactive and impulsive, but able to pay attention.
  • Inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive (the most common form of ADHD).
Children who only have inattentive symptoms of ADD/ADHD are often overlooked, since they're not disruptive.

However, the symptoms of inattention have consequences:
  • getting in hot water with parents and teachers for not following directions;
  • underperforming in school;
  • or clashing with other kids over not playing by the rules.
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is a diagnosis applied to children and adults who consistently display certain characteristic behaviour over a period of time. The most common behaviour falls into two categories: inattention and or hyperactivity/impulsiveness.

If you or your child are struggling with ADD/ADHD, take hope. There are many safe and effective treatments that can drastically improve its symptoms. ADD/ADHD treatment can boost school and job performance, improve organizational skills, and foster better relationships.

Exercising is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Physical activity immediately boosts the brain's dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels-all of which affect focus and attention. But unlike ADD/ADHD medication, exercise doesn't require a prescription and its side effect free.

In addition to improving concentration and decreasing hyperactivity and impulsivity, regular exercise can also elevate your mood, combat stress, improve memory, increase motivation, keep depression and anxiety at bay, help you sleep better, and prime your brain for learning.

For the best relief of symptoms:
  1. Try to exercise on most days. You don't have to go to the gym. A 30-minute walk four times a week is enough to provide benefits. Thirty minutes of activity every day is even better.

  2. Pick something enjoyable, so you'll stick with it. Activities that require close attention to body movements, such as dance, gymnastics, martial arts, and skateboarding, are particularly good. Team sports are also a good choice. The social element keeps them interesting.

  3. Get out into nature. Studies show that spending time in nature can reduce the symptoms of ADD/ADHD in both children and adults. Double up on the benefits by combining "green time" with exercise. Try hiking, trail running, or walking in a local park or scenic area.
Eating right can regulate the symptoms of ADD / ADHD

While diet doesn't cause ADD/ADHD, what you eat does have an effect on your mood, energy levels, and symptoms. Eating regularly is particularly important. Many people with ADD/ADHD eat erratically-often going without a meal for hours and then binging on whatever is around. This isn't good for your symptoms of ADD/ADHD or your emotional and physical health. You can turn things around by setting regular mealtimes and planning your meals with ADD/ADHD in mind.
  1. Schedule regular meals or snacks no more than three hours apart.

  2. Make sure you're getting enough zinc, iron, and magnesium in your diet. Consider a daily multi-vitamin if you're unsure.

  3. Try to include a little protein and complex carbohydrates at each meal or snack. These foods will help you feel more alert while decreasing hyperactivity.

  4. Add more omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. A growing number of studies show that omega-3s improve mental focus in people with ADD/ADHD. Omega-3s are found in salmon, tuna, sardines, and some fortified eggs and milk products. Fish oil supplements are an easy way to boost your intake.
The importance of sleep in ADD / ADHD treatment

Many adults and children with ADD/ADHD have sleep difficulties.

The most common problems include:
  1. Trouble getting to sleep at night, often because racing thoughts are keeping you up.

  2. Unrefreshing, restless sleep. You or your child toss and turn throughout the night and wake up feeling tired.

  3. Difficulty waking up in the morning. Waking up is a daily struggle. You or your child may sleep through multiple alarms and feel groggy and irritable for hours after getting up.
Regular quality sleep can lead to vast improvement in the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Simple changes to daytime habits go a long way toward resting well at night.

Homeopathic Approach

Homeopathy offers natural, effective remedies for children suffering from ADHD. Rather than suppressing the symptoms of restlessness, difficulty in focusing, and lack of behavioral control.

Homeopathy gets to the root cause of the problem and works to bring the system into a state of balance.

Homeopathy individualizes the child by his/her unique qualities and conditions such as genetic predisposition, anxiety, depression, fear, grief, low self-esteem and anger, rather than labeling the child with one general diagnosis. Children with symptoms of ADD can also have very wonderful qualities. They are often curious, communicative, passionate and lively. Homeopathy will not diminish these qualities, but works only to address the symptoms that are out of balance.

As Homeopathic remedies are chosen to treat the whole person rather than to treat a disease, it also takes into consideration physical symptoms such as asthma, frequent ear infections or whatever health issues the individual may have when choosing the most suitable remedy for the child. Also very important, Homeopathic remedies do not produce any side effects if administered correctly.

Children with ADHD who undergo homeopathic treatment may experience results in a few weeks and will continue to experience improvement over time. Under Homeopathic treatment, children with ADHD will experience improved concentration, improved behavior at school and at home, better grades in school, and better social relationships.

In addition, they will be less restlessness, less impulsive, and they will experience improved overall health and general immunity. However although improvements in behavior and health will be observed in few weeks, it may be necessary to continue the treatment for a year or two in order to obtain the complete, more long-lasting benefits of homeopathic treatment.

If the child is already on stimulants and Homeopathic treatment is being considered, the child can continue the stimulant medication while taking homeopathic remedies. The stimulants can be slowly reduced under the recommendation of the child's doctor.
